Similarities

As a counterpoint to my post about differences, here are some similarities about people here and home:

  • People are friendly individually, but get them in groups or behind the wheel of a car, and it suddenly because every man for himself.

  • In-laws, especially mother-in-laws, can be problematic.

  • Mothers worry (excessively) about their adult children.

Two things here really remind me of manners in my part of the world, the Southern US:

-People here often use a courtesy or professional title with a person's first name. ("Mr. Jim is meeting with Mr. Ahmad, and Dr. Noora will join them later.")

-Business meetings, emails, phone calls, etc. usually begin with pleasantries and/or small talk. I have to remind myself of this with email, since the general desire is to cut to the chase.
