The Most Disturbing Thing I Read Today

In Italy it is illegal to praise someone who has committed a crime.

I always understood that Europeans have much freedom of speech than we do in the US (and also that we are drifting in that direction with hate speech laws, campus speech codes, McCain-Feingold, etc), but I have to say this really shocked me. Not that I agree with this woman's praise of a murderous thug, but really, shouldn't social opprobrium be enough to handle this sort of idiocy?

(Fair Warning: I have committed a crime [speeding], so praise me in Italy at your own risk.)
