Continuing this blog's (ok, my) obsession with Pop-Tarts (this is the seventh post about them), Abela is not only carrying them on a pretty regular basis now, but today I noticed that they even have some of the low fat variety.
And now for some Pop-Tart humor:

Pork Free Pop Tarts
A fellow blogger commented on yesterday's post saying that Pop Tarts contain pork. Some of them do contain pork. However, Kellogs *does* make pork free Pop Tarts. Careful inspection of our boxes of frosted cherry revealed that this flavor does not contain pork gelatin. The strawberry flavor in the orange boxes are made using beef gelatin.

It's kind of hard to read, but this is printed on the bottom of the box. I'm guessing that Kellogs made these pork free so that they would sell in this region. One more thing worth mentioning........these Pop Tarts are a product of the USA.

What a Find!
Since moving to Al Ain, we have found exactly *two* grocery stores here that sell Pop Tarts: Mega Mart in the mall and Abella. Mega Mart only sells the Mint Chocolate flavor. Brn does NOT like those. Even the boys turn their noses up to the 'green kind', as they are called in our home. In the past, Abella has stocked frosted strawberry and a different chocolate flavor. We shopped there this weekend, hoping to buy a couple of boxes to satisfy a craving. Look what we found......................

Brn's *favorite* flavor of Pop Tarts! He is one happy guy!
***These Pop Tarts are perched in a very high spot in our kitchen. The only way I can get to them is by trying to knock a box off with the broom. That doesn't deter the little people from trying, though. Every time I go into the kitchen, I see that someone has pushed a chair up to the counter in a feeble attempt to climb the 'mountain' to attain the 'prize'.

Pop Tarts! In Al Ain!
For the first time ever I have seen Pop Tarts for sale in Al Ain! Mega Mart in the mall had some yesterday. Admittedly, they are Chocolate Mint flavor, quite possibly the worst flavor ever, but at least it is progress.

The Greatest Asset of the Emirates
First, let me say that it is amazing how much better I feel today after posting about feeling homesick and blue this morning. I don't know if just admitting that that is what was wrong helped, but I have been much happier today. Thanks for everyone who either commented in person or in the comments to make me feel better.
Emirati's comments especially made me think of the best thing about living here: the people. I have had some bad experiences with institutions and bureaucracies (especially my bank-don't get me started!), but I cannot remember a bad experience with an Emirati as an individual yet (at least when they are not behind the wheel, but that doesn't really count).
Let me give you three examples, all in just the last 24 hours:
1. Emirati, whom I have never met in real life, reading about my feeling homesick, offers to get Pop-Tarts and Kool Aid.
2. My oldest son falls at on the escalator at Carrefour last night, cutting his leg slightly. Five people, hearing his crying, come to help us, including bandaging the cut and consoling him.
3. This afternoon the whole family went walking through the Al Ain Oasis. About ten minutes before sunset, a man that at that time had to be quite hungry and thirsty stopped and gave my children some of the grapes he was carrying.
All this is on top of the everyday friendliness and courtesy of my Emirati co-workers.

Hurricanes, Walmart, and Pop-Tarts
This post at Marginal Revolution about Walmart's reaction reminded me of something I saw last year on an American news show. Walmart keeps a database of buying patterns at its stores so that it can know what to ship where. One of their employees discovered that whenever a hurricane hit, the stores sold out of strawberry Poptarts. So now whenever a hurricane is approaching, they ship a whole mess of strawberry Poptarts to the region before hand so the stores will have enough.
Mmm, Poptarts...

Things I miss and don't miss
Inspired by a post on Essays in Idleness, here is a list of things I miss from America:
1. My family. The only real heartbreaking absence on the list. But, only four weeks until Bss and the kids get here, so this one will get better soon.
2. Pop-tarts. Some of my co-workers claim that they have seen these at various stores around town, but every time I go to these stores, they don't have them. Maybe I'll see some in Dubai tomorrow when I'm there.
3. Having a car. Which is why I'm going to Dubai, to go car shopping. It will be nice not to have to look for a cab to go somewhere.
4. Dr Pepper. I have seen this once or twice, but only in individual cans, not 2 liter bottles.
5. Bookstores with a wide selection of books in English.
6. Rain.
Things I don't miss:
1. College students who think that everyone needs to listen to their music as they drive.
2. Severe thunderstorms.
3. Local TV news.
